There are no exponentials, only S-curves

In a finite world, every exponential is the start of an S-curve. Lasting growth comes from stacking curves, one step at a time.

Everyone loves an exponential curve. Up and to the right, faster every month.

We don't believe in them.

In a finite world, nothing grows exponentially forever. What looks like an exponential is almost always the first half of an S-curve.

Every curve flattens

An S-curve starts slow, then takes off, then flattens. A product finds its first users, spreads fast, then reaches everyone it can reach. A market fills up. A technique hits a physical limit.

At the start, the takeoff looks exactly like an exponential. That's the trap. The steep part feels like it will last. It never does, because there is always a ceiling: a market size, a law of physics, a limited number of people with the problem.

That isn't pessimism. It's the shape of everything that grows.

But curves can stack

Here's the good news. When one curve flattens, another can start on top of it.

Look at processors. For decades, chips got faster mostly by running at a higher clock speed. Megahertz, then gigahertz. Then, in the mid-2000s, that curve hit a wall: faster clocks meant too much heat.

Performance didn't stop. The industry jumped to a new curve: several cores working in parallel. When that one started to flatten for many workloads, it jumped again: graphics chips running thousands of small operations at once, then chips designed for one job, like AI.

Each of those curves flattened. Stacked together, they look like steady growth for fifty years.

The long curve is not one exponential. It's a staircase of S-curves, each starting before the last one runs out.

How we think about growth at Enobase

We plan for steps, not for a single miracle curve.

One trade, then the next. Each industry we serve is its own S-curve. We start with a trade, grow until we're the obvious choice there, and the curve flattens because the trade is finite. That's fine. By then, the foundation we built is ready to start the next trade, faster than the last. Catering first. Then the next one, and the one after that.

Small, then larger, then largest. Within a trade, we start with small businesses, where decisions are fast and the pain is sharp. Then mid-sized companies, with more people, more locations and more rules. Then large organizations, with their own demands on security, compliance and scale. Each segment is its own curve, and each one needs the product to have grown up a little.

Every building block is a new curve. Each primitive we add (a ledger, a scheduler, a document engine), each module built on top, each connection to a bank or a tax system opens a new curve for every trade at once. A trade that couldn't run on Enobase yesterday can today.

Product, then agents. First, software that fits the trade. Then agents that do real work inside it. A new curve on top of the same foundation.

Why this matters

Believing in exponentials makes you do strange things. You spend like the curve will never bend, and you panic when it does.

Believing in S-curves makes you ask a better question every quarter: which curve are we on, how far is the ceiling, and what's the next step we should already be building?

Steady growth, for a long time, is just good steps, one after the other.
