A cracked diffuser is declared on the work order, with a reason, and the replacement comes off stock. The order's cost knows.

Every order makes one piece. The bill of materials is written for that order from the drawing, the routing is the workshop's four steps, the work order carries the drawing revision and the finish, and the cost is the hours the maker logged plus the material, read against the quote's price.
A cosmetics manufacturer, making small series by batch
Every order makes a batch. The bill of materials is in kilograms and units, the order comes from the stock rule, the batch gets a lot number and an expiry date, the fill step carries a pH check, and the lots of every component are recorded for the day someone asks.

A bill of materials is a relation between products, with a quantity and a unit on each line. A routing is a list of operations, each with a work centre, a planned time, the drawing it shows and the check it asks. Both are objects you can open: add a colour temperature to the panel, a drawing revision to the operation, a pH range to the check, a scrap allowance to the line, a "made here or bought" flag to the component, and the order, the work order and the tablet carry the field from then on. A calculated field reads the standard cost back from the lines.

The operator never types a reference. The drawing and the instruction are documents on the operation, so the tablet at Bench B2 shows LB-600 rev. B because the order says so, not because someone printed the right one.
