The bill of materials and the routing sit on the product: the components with their quantities, the operations with their work centre and their time. Change the product and every order after it follows.

  1. The bill of materials and the routing sit on the product: the components with their quantities, the operations with their work centre and their time. Change the product and every order after it follows.

  2. An accepted quote for twelve creates the manufacturing order for twelve, with the customer and the date on it. A made-to-stock product below its minimum creates one too, without anyone asking.

  3. Each line of the order reads the stock: what is on hand is reserved, what is missing is short, and the shortage becomes a line on a purchase order to your supplier, with the date the order needs it.

  4. One work order per operation, on the tablet at the work centre. The operator starts it, sees the drawing and the instruction, declares the quantity done and the scrap, and the time is logged while it runs.

  5. When the last work order is done the lot exists: twelve units, a lot number, the components it consumed and the time it took, and a unit cost read from both. It is ready for the delivery the quote promised.

Multi-level bills of materials

A sub-assembly is a product with its own bill and its own routing. Order the finished product and the sub-assembly's order is created under it.

Scrap declared where it happens

A cracked diffuser is declared on the work order, with a reason, and the replacement comes off stock. The order's cost knows.

A quality check at the step

Wire and test carries a check the operator answers before the work order closes. A fail opens a non-conformity on the lot. See Quality.

Material at the price it was bought, time at the work centre's rate, per order and per unit, beside what the bill of materials said it would be.

What adapts: what an order makes (one piece or a batch), what its bill of materials is written in (pieces, sheets, kilograms), the steps of its routing, the fields the work order carries, the check at each step, and where its cost lands. Two businesses can run Manufacturing and disagree on every one of those.

A bespoke furniture maker, making to order

Every order makes one piece. The bill of materials is written for that order from the drawing, the routing is the workshop's four steps, the work order carries the drawing revision and the finish, and the cost is the hours the maker logged plus the material, read against the quote's price.

A cosmetics manufacturer, making small series by batch

Every order makes a batch. The bill of materials is in kilograms and units, the order comes from the stock rule, the batch gets a lot number and an expiry date, the fill step carries a pH check, and the lots of every component are recorded for the day someone asks.

A bill of materials is a relation between products, with a quantity and a unit on each line. A routing is a list of operations, each with a work centre, a planned time, the drawing it shows and the check it asks. Both are objects you can open: add a colour temperature to the panel, a drawing revision to the operation, a pH range to the check, a scrap allowance to the line, a "made here or bought" flag to the component, and the order, the work order and the tablet carry the field from then on. A calculated field reads the standard cost back from the lines.

One screen at the bench: the step, the drawing at the revision this order needs, the work instruction, the quantity done, the time running, and the check to answer before Done. The operator never types a reference. The drawing and the instruction are documents on the operation, so the tablet at Bench B2 shows LB-600 rev. B because the order says so, not because someone printed the right one.
